Fillings

A cavity is a hole in the tooth that is caused by decay. Decay occurs when plaque, the sticky substance that forms on teeth, combines with the sugars and/or starches of the food we eat. This combination produces acids that attack tooth enamel. The best way to prevent tooth decay is brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and going to your regular dental cleanings/check-ups. Eating healthy food and avoiding snacks and drinks that are high in sugar are also ways to prevent decay.

About Fillings

Fillings are important for treating cavities and preventing further tooth damage.

Getting Fillings

What is the procedure?

  • The dentist applies a local anesthetic to numb the area around the tooth.
  • If the cavity is small, anesthesia may not be necessary.
  • The dentist uses a drill, laser, or air abrasion tool to remove the decayed part of the tooth.
  • The area is thoroughly cleaned to remove bacteria and debris.
  • The empty space is filled with a filling material (composite resin, gold, or porcelain).
  • The type of filling depends on location, cost, and personal preference.
  • The dentist shapes and polishes the filling to match your tooth’s natural shape.
  • For tooth-colored fillings, a blue light is used to harden the material.
  • The dentist checks your bite and makes small adjustments if needed.
  • You may be asked to bite down to ensure comfort and proper alignment.

The entire procedure usually takes 30-60 minutes per tooth.

✅ Avoid eating until the numbness wears off.
✅ Mild sensitivity is normal for a few days.
✅ Maintain good oral hygiene to prevent future cavities.
